Back-to-School Blues or Breakthrough? Tips for Easing the Transition

Alex Koupal • August 6, 2025

The smell of fresh notebooks.
Early alarms.
The
“How is summer already over?” feeling.

Whether you're a mom trying to wrestle kids out of summer mode, or a young professional feeling that weird emotional shift (you know the one), the back-to-school season is more than just a date on the calendar. It’s a whole vibe shift.

But here’s the good news: this time doesn’t have to feel like a breakdown. It could actually be your breakthrough.

Let’s flip the script together.

1. It’s Okay to Feel Weird

August can feel weird. One minute you’re relaxing by the pool, the next you’re staring down school supply lists, new routines, and that creeping pressure to “get it together.”

Whether you're juggling drop-offs or just feeling the shift in your own energy—it’s okay to feel a little off. You’re not alone—and you’re definitely not doing it wrong.

2. Set Some Boundaries (Yes, Even with Your Calendar)

Back-to-school doesn’t have to mean back-to-being-burned-out. Block out buffer time. Protect your downtime. Say no to overcommitting. Life moves fast this time of year—build in space to actually breathe.

3. Stop Waiting for “Later”

You’ve probably told yourself, “Once things calm down, I’ll…”

Whatever it is you’ve been putting off—your goals, your self-care, your next step—just start. Start messy. Start small. Just start.

4. Reflect and Reset

This season brings change—and that’s not always a bad thing. Instead of resisting it, use it as a time to check in with yourself:
→ What’s working?
→ What’s draining you?
→ What do you
actually want this next season to feel like?

You deserve to answer those questions just as much as your kid deserves a new backpack.

5. When in Doubt, Reach Out

Back-to-school season can shake things up—and not just for the kids. If you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or just need a neutral place to vent and reset—I’m here.

The teen years come with a lot: changes hormones, pressure, identity stuff. Feeling tired, irritable, or needing space is normal. But if those moods stick around longer than a few days or start affecting their sleep, eating, motivation, or self-worth... it might be more than just a bad week.

Let’s just say it out loud: if you’ve ever lain in bed staring at the ceiling, replaying a conversation from days ago, or sat in a meeting wondering if everyone secretly thinks you’re bad at your job—hi. Welcome to the club. Anxiety in adulthood is real. And more common than we’re willing to admit. You’re not weird, broken, or “too much.” You’re a human being trying to navigate a world that throws a lot at you.
