You Can’t Build a New Life With an Old Identity
If how you see yourself hasn’t changed, your results won’t either, no matter how hard you try.
A lot of people come into coaching thinking they need better habits, more discipline, or a clearer routine.
And yes, those things matter.
But what I’ve seen over and over again, especially working with adolescents and young adults, is this:
If you don’t know who you are, nothing you build is going to feel solid.
You can create a whole plan for your life, follow it for a few weeks, maybe even a few months, but if it doesn’t match how you see yourself, it won’t stick.
That’s not a motivation problem.
That’s an identity problem.
What I Mean by "Identity Work"
When I talk about identity, I’m not talking about labels or titles.
I’m talking about:
- The way you see yourself when no one’s around
- The beliefs you’ve been carrying, even the ones you didn’t choose
- The stories you’ve picked up from family, culture, and past experiences
A lot of people are moving through life operating from beliefs they’ve never questioned.
“I’m not consistent.”
“I always mess things up.”
“I’m not good enough.”
And then they’re frustrated when their actions keep lining up with that.
Why Change Feels So Hard
You can’t outwork a belief you haven’t addressed.
You can push yourself, stay motivated, try to do better, but if deep down, you don’t see yourself differently, your behavior will eventually fall back into what feels familiar.
That’s why surface-level change doesn’t last.
It’s not because you’re lazy.
It’s because you’re trying to build on a foundation that hasn’t been worked through yet.
The Work I Do With Clients
This is where I focus.
Not just on what you need to do, but on helping you understand:
- Where your patterns are coming from
- What beliefs are actually driving your decisions
- And who you’re becoming moving forward
I’ve spent years working with adolescents and young adults, and this stage of life is huge when it comes to identity.
A lot of people are trying to figure out who they are while also dealing with pressure, expectations, and constant comparison.
That combination can leave people feeling stuck, disconnected, or unsure of themselves.
If You Feel Stuck, Read This
If you’ve been trying to change but keep ending up in the same place, I want you to consider this:
It might not be about doing more.
It might be about getting honest about how you see yourself and where that came from.
Because once that shifts, everything else starts to move differently.
Not perfectly.
But more consistently.
More grounded.
More real.
